About Us

The Morrinsville Skate Club all started early 2022, when Charnay Van Rooyen moved here with her family. She reached out to the community to see if there were any keen roller-skaters to join her and her daughter to meet up for a social skate session every so often.

With the keen interest from many locals she held the very first sessions at the David Street School undercover courts on the 12th April 2022. Interest grew and attendance also climbed.

It became evident that there was a great need for an alternative and social sport for our local community here in Morrinsville, and so we set about looking for an all-weather venue and found the Morrinsville Westpac Events centre.

At first the club started charging just a gold coin donation to cover the costs of the venue hire. With more interest looming, this soon became a bigger project and a small committee was called on to help with organising and opening the venue for sessions. After posting on the Morrinsville Skate Club Facebook group, there were instant takers saying they were keen to be involved.

Our very first committee meeting was held on the 29th July 2022 – where we all collaborated and decided that the next move was to incorporate our club and become a registered not-for-profit sports club. We created a detailed list of required equipment and safety gear needed to operate the club responsibly. The first round of registrations were opened for Term 3 of 2022 followed by our first Roller Disco for Halloween which had an amazing turn-out.

We have come so far since the conception of the Morrinsville Skate Club with our volunteer committee growing and many more club members willing to help volunteer.

We have on average 80 registered members per term and we see all ages and abilities attend. Many families are now skating together, which other sports don’t offer. We welcome quad skates (roller skates) and inline skates (roller blades) at our club, and finish each session with a speed skate by ability.

We recently affiliated with Kiwi Skate NZ and have professional trainers coming to train our registered members. We attended our first introduction competition on the 18th March where we had 11 members perform.

Our club continues to grow and we invite experienced and new skaters alike to come along and join our club.  We skate on Tuesday afternoons and Sunday mornings and offer low-cost memberships for this fun and friendly sport.
